Description
Students will learn how musical rhythm—traditionally written and performed—maps onto the MIDI grid used in modern production tools. By the end of the class, students will be able to confidently program foundational drum patterns using platforms such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or an MPC-style workflow.
What You’ll Learn
- Core rhythmic values (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes)
- Time signatures and subdivision from a musical perspective
- How notation translates to MIDI and step sequencing
- Programming foundational kick, snare, and hi-hat patterns
- Understanding straight vs. swung rhythms
- Building basic grooves across multiple genres
How the Class Works
This class blends short lectures with interactive, hands-on activities throughout. Students will clap, count, program, and build patterns in real time—ensuring concepts are immediately applied, not just explained.
Who This Class Is For
- Beginners with little or no drum programming experience
- Musicians transitioning into digital production
- Producers who want stronger rhythmic fundamentals
- Students working in a DAW or hardware-based environment
Outcome:
Students leave with multiple programmed drum patterns and a clear understanding of how classical rhythm concepts power modern beat-making.
